This painting is inspired by Jauhar, a Hindu Rajput practice of mass self-immolation by females, in the Indian subcontinent to avoid capture, enslavement and rape by invaders when facing certain defeat during a war. Women found Jauhar more dignified option and Rajput women were always known for their fearlessness, sacrifice and bravery. I wanted to capture in this painting the profound courage and resilience displayed by these women in the face of unimaginable adversity. Their choice of Jauhar, while heart-breaking, represents a fierce determination to preserve their dignity and autonomy in the midst of chaos and conflict. Through this artwork, I aim to honour their strength and sacrifice, while also shedding light on the complexities of history and the enduring spirit of resistance against oppression.
